dc-o ere is the announcement of the GFS premiere screening that went out on our mailing lists, as well as on the Groton list-serv TalkAboutGroton. This note was also reprinted in the Groton Herald.

We at the Groton Film Society are delighted to announce our premiere screening and our initial venue, along with future event dates.

Our first screening will be the independent film "The World's Fastest Indian" (2005) starring Anthony Hopkins, and the event will take place on Saturday December 1 at Lawrence Academy (LA). The GFS committee has screened this film, which is based on a true story, and we all agree that it is an inspirational slice of life about the human spirit and one man's commitment to fulfilling his life-long dream.

Come at 7:00 to the Williams Arts Center, 26 Powderhouse Road, Groton, for refreshments and hors d'oeuvres and a talk introducing the film (possibly including a guest speaker to be announced). Mix and mingle in LA's MacNeil Lounge until the 8:00 screening time in LA's intimate Recital Hall. Those who so desire can stay after the film for further in-depth discussion.

The next two dates on our calendar are Saturday Jan. 5, 2008 and Saturday Feb. 2, 2008. Both of these events will also take place at Lawrence Academy. Details on the films and other arrangements will be forthcoming.

(We are unable to offer alcoholic beverages at the first screening due to the presence of LA students on campus. The second screening will take place during LA's winter break and we are planning to serve wine at that event.)

For your future reference, here are tentative dates for the rest of our first year of operation. Venues haven't been selected yet and the dates are subject to change, but it's worth penciling in these Saturdays on your calendar:

Mar. 1, 2008
Apr. 5
May 3
May 31
Jun. 28
Jul. 26
Aug. 23
Sep. 27
Oct. 25, 2008

Those of you who have already purchased memberships may pick up your membership cards, and bonus guest passes, at the first screening on December 1. So please bring guests! And for those of you who are not yet members, you may attend the first screening and buy a $12 guest membership at the door. If you then decide to join GFS, we will credit the $12 toward your membership dues.

Memberships are for a calendar period that will start on the date of the first screening. Each film GFS shows will have one screening date until membership is large enough to support multiple screenings per film. For those members who may not be able to attend certain dates because of conflicts, we will extend your memberships by one month for each missed screening up to a maximum of a three-month extension.

We hope you are as excited as we are about the launch of the Groton Film Society. We couldn't have gotten this far without your support. We all thank you very much and appreciate your commitment to broadening the area's cultural offerings!
